West-Agder lady

The silver that goes with this Bunad is a neck button and/or a small ripple ring together with a big ripple ring, a heart-brooch and a Bol-brooch as the main brooches. You may use up to four brooches at the chest. An eyelet chain and tightening band, cufflinks, a pair of buckles for the vest, a shawl fastener, 3 cloudberry buttons to fasten the skirt/apron and suspenders, a purse clasp and shoe buckles. Some choose to use a dish-brooch, but it is more or less "stolen" from the East-Agder Bunad.

The color of the silver was traditionally fair silver, alternatively with gilded dishes on the heart-brooch. There is no law or rule that states that this is the right shade of silver, so you may choose oxidized silver too. This makes the maintenance much easier. Every variation contributes to make your Bunad unique.

Children's brooches

There are many variants of children's Bunads and as a consequence there are a lot of different brooches. Some brooches are specific for a certain type of children's Bunad, while others are more general.

Bol brooch

In Telemark it was a tradition that girls used the serpent brooch. When she got married she was given a Bol brooch. The Serpent brooch was then moved down from its top position on the chest, and the Bol brooch would take its place.

Bunad rings

Rings for the Bunad exist in many varieties. The band is open at the back of the finger so it will fit every finger it's put on.

Bunad shoes

Bunad shoes are usually outside of our specialty, but as a service to our customers in the U.S., we now cooperate with "Loitegaard shoes". The buckles provided with the shoes is not in silver, but can usually be replaced.

Neck buttons / Neck pins

If there are buttonholes in the collar of the shirt, you can use neck buttons. If your collar lacks holes you should use a neck pin.

Fastners, clasps, buckles

Fasteners, claps and buckles have a wide variety of uses. You have everything from delicate fasteners for your cape to more robust belt buckles.

Heart brooch

Other names for a Heart brooch are "Maria brooch" or "Crown brooch". These brooches symbolize Virgin Mary's pure love, which was crowned with luck. Because of this, the heart brooch is used as a love symbol on the Bunad.

Hair accessories

Hair accessories might not be the first thing you think of when you choose your Bunad silver, but why not use a brooch for your hair too? It is common to arrange your hair for great occasions.

Buttons

You will find buttons in a wide variety. Everything from the "hobo" button (fanteknappen) to the more complex Holland buttons.

Ripple rings

These rings are often called neck rings because they are used to hold the neck collar together. The silversmiths on the other hand refer to this brooch as a ripple ring. The ripple ring can replace the Neck pin.

Shawl attachments

Ask yourself; why not just tie the shawl? The answer is; if you did that, a lot of the brooches would be covered up. Since the brooches was so important for showing of your status and riches, it would be stupid to cover it up!

Tightening band, eyelet band

The eyelet-band is sown on to the vest. Then the tightening band is threaded through it like a shoelace. That way you will fasten the vest and tighten and lift whatever needs tightening and lifting.

Here you will find everything that can (but not necessarily) be used for your Bunad. There is 17. of May ribbons, belts, Chain for the Beltestakk, Bridal crowns, Arm ring, Suspender buckles etc.

Purse clasps

The purse clasp was traditionally sand cast brass, and sometimes gilded or silvered. They also exist in pure silver and some other variations.

Earrings

Some say that earrings do not belong on a Bunad. Strictly speaking this is correct. Back then, earrings were totally useless since the ears were covered. Today many skip the headgear and use earrings insted.

Lady of the house key

Husfruen was responsible for both food, clothing and household goods. That's why she had a key in her belt. Obtaining the wife of the house key from either mother or mother-in-law was an honor, and it meant that she now had power.

Knives

In the old days, the Bunad knife was a food tool. Today it is only to Bunad and party costume that we are allowed to carry the knife in public place. In earlier times, the knife was an important heirloom that passed into inheritance through many generations.

Watch chain and timepieces

A gorgeous pocket watch with chain are nice Accessories to the Bunad. You can choose between mechanical clockwork, or a battery driven clockwork.

Dish brooches

Small dishes hanging from the brooch was a common symbol for a girls virginity. Dish brooches were often used as engagement gifts. The more dishes the brooch had, the more the boy appreciated his virgin.
